AI-generated images of NZ furseal

I asked three different AI-image generators to create an image of a New Zealand furseal resting on a rock. Check out the results below.

I’m a wee bit obsessed with the New Zealand furseal/kekeno. They are so adorable and since moving to the South Island, I get to spot them a lot more. I could spend hours watching them sunbathe!

I’m needing kekeno images for a current project, so for fun, I experimented with AI images generators:

  1. Adobe Firefly

  2. Microsoft Bing Image Creator

  3. Midjourney

Check out the results:

For reference, here are some photos I took recently of real NZ furseal/kekeno. Taken at Kātiki Point, Moeraki. I think Midjourney performed the best, and the result from Adobe Firefly I found terrifying!

I’ll definitely be sticking to photographs over AI-images for this project. But I do see great potential for using AI for enhancing existing images. For example, the AI examples all generated amazingly reaslistic rocks. I can see the potential for using the AI generative fill option in Photoshop to expand the background scenery on the seal photos.

And before you go, a fun fact about the New Zealand furseal/kekeno -

They dive deeper and longer than any other fur seal!
